Historic Oxfordshire Landmark Building Hits the Market
08 April 2026
A Grade II listed building in the heart of Banbury, Oxfordshire is offering a rare glimpse into the town’s commercial past. 33–34 Bridge Street, overlooking the iconic Market Place, has stood at the centre of town life for centuries and is now on the market.
The building sits on land tied to Banbury’s market town heritage, with records dating back to the Domesday Book of 1086. From the 12th century onwards, this corner of Bridge Street has been at the heart of trade, commerce, and community events. Generations of businesses have operated here, serving local residents and the wider rural area.
33–34 Bridge Street is a classic example of historic market town architecture: shops at street level with living and working spaces above. The building housed Lampreys HQ (an agricultural and building materials supplier) from 1839 – John Lamprey bought R Edmunds and Son corn merchandising and reportedly lived above the shop. The advertisements on the building were conveniently placed to showcase their seed and feed business – as well as coal (as they had lime kilns near the Canal) – as well as bricks from nearby brickworks. At that time Banbury was a thriving agricultural centre – with Banbury market being one of the largest livestock markets in the country.
Banbury itself is steeped in history. The town is famous for the Banbury Cake, a spiced pastry dating back to the 16th century, and landmarks like the Banbury Cross, rebuilt in the 19th century, continue to draw visitors. The Market Place, directly opposite the building, still hosts weekly markets and community gatherings, linking the past to the present.
Today, 33–34 Bridge Street houses established businesses including an estate agency and a recruitment firm, but its next chapter could see it adapt to the evolving high street with town centre living or flexible office space. The property’s listed status protects its heritage, ensuring it remains a visible link to Banbury’s historic streetscape even as the town grows along the M40 corridor.
The sale of 33–34 Bridge Street is more than a property transaction. It is a chance to preserve and reinvigorate a piece of Banbury’s history, keeping it alive in the heart of the town for generations to come. White Commercial Surveyors M40 Office is advising on the building’s sale.
